Mrs. Hayes was the daughter of the late Augustus Bacon Turnbull, Sr. and Elizabeth Jarrett Turnbull, she was born in Stephens County, Georgia where she lived all her life. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Hayes.

She was a graduate of Toccoa High School in 1930, Georgia State College for Women in 1933, having received her teaching degree. She began teaching in 1933 and taught in many county schools in Georgia and South Carolina until retiring in 1974. She was a lifetime member of Providence United Methodist Church where she was the secretary and treasurer.

Mrs. Hayes was very active in community activities and had served as a charter member of the Stephens County Historical Society and a charter member of the Shiloh Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Stephens County Hospital Auxiliary where she was recently honored at the dedication of the Love Light Tree at the hospital, a member of the American Cancer Society, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Retired Teachers Association and Pastor Parish Committee of the 1st. United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Hayes was the Star Teacher in Stephens County in 1964, State of Georgia Winner Award in 1994, Senior Woman of the Year in 2000, Grand Marshall of the Toccoa Christmas Parade, and elected to the Toccoa/Stephens County Hall of Fame in 2009. A building was erected, Elizabeth T. Hayes Pavilion, at the Tugaloo Bend by the Tugaloo Corridor Association in her honor.

Funeral services will be held Sunday December 21, 2014 at 3:00 P.M. from the Hillcrest Chapel of Acree-Davis Funeral Home with the Reverend Bryan Stokes and the Reverend Brent Ware officiating. Interment will follow in Stephens Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the home and will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M on Saturday December 20, 2014 and 2 until service time on Sunday at the funeral home.

Flowers are optional and memorials may be made in her memory to the Providence Methodist Church or the Stephens County Historical Society.
