A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 3:00 pm, at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 2230 Walton Way, with Reverend Doctor J. Andrew Menger officiating.
Lela was born December 13, 1922 in Walhalla, South Carolina the daughter of Harry R. Hughs and Milwee Talbert Hughs, both deceased. She graduated in 1942 from the University of South Carolina with a double major in Art and English. Lela also attended the University of Georgia and received a Masters of Art Education degree in 1980. After teaching 25 years for the Richmond County Board of Education she retired. She was a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd and volunteered in the Parsonage Books and Gifts for over 10 years. Her many memberships included the Mary Cuthbert Circle, Alpha Delta Teacher's Sorority and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also active in the Augusta Branch of the Writers Group and won numerous awards for her writing through competitions and workshops at Augusta State University.
Lela was also preceded in death by her husband, LTC. Ret. Roderick F. Turnbull.
She is survived by two daughters and one son; Louisa T. Vaughn (Steve) of Bonita Springs, FL; Gretchen T. McCance (Don) of Tyrone, GA; Rick Turnbull (Donna) of Burnettown, SC; grandsons, Wes Vaughn, Chuck Vaughn, and granddaughters Alisa McCance Bieck and Taylor Turnbull; one great grandson, Lachlan Vaughn.
Honorary pallbearers were the Ladies of the Mary Cuthbert Circle.
