Margaret Matilda Astner, of Sedalia, died Sep 28, 2006, at Hidden Lake Care Center in Raytown.
Margaret was born on Dec 25, 1916, in Goldsberry, MO, the daughter of Herschel and Dollie Turner.
She was a special, joyful spirit, who often received extra "oversight" by her older sister LaVerne during her early years when children were to be seen and not heard. After graduating high school, she earned a teaching certificate from the Missouri Conference of Seventh Day Adventists and began teaching in a succession of one-room schoolhouses, from rural southwest Missouri to northern Missouri and over into the St. Louis area. She upgraded her teaching skills by attending summer school terms at Union College in Lincoln, NE, and returned there for additional schooling during World War II.
She married William George Astner in 1941, and they moved from Clinton, MO, to Boulder, CO, in 1953 to raise their four children in the shadows of the Rocky Mountains. As the children grew up, Margaret was a substitute teacher at Boulder Junior Academy (BJA) and also served on the BJA school board, including a term as Chairman of the Board. When teaching opportunities were not available, she took other interesting part-time jobs, from clerking at health food stores to working as a linotype operator on the evening shift for the Boulder Daily Camera.
In the late 60s, Bill and Margaret moved back to Missouri and lived in Oak Grove, during which time Margaret worked at the Missouri SDA Conference office until she retired. As life-long members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Margaret and Bill were instrumental in building the congregation in Oak Grove from a branch Sabbath School to a fully constituted SDA Church while they lived there. After retirement, Margaret and Bill moved to Brooking Park Village in Sedalia, MO, where they lived until Feb 2006. Margaret volunteered as a teaching assistant at the Sedalia SDA Church School, where she continued to help youngsters learn as well as supplied lessons in proper classroom courtesy and etiquette.
During her entire life, Margaret was adept at keeping in touch with family and friends and was always available to lend an ear and a helping hand. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, William G Astner; her sister LaVerne Turner of Bucklin, MO; three daughters, Karen E Astner of Kansas City, MO, Janet L Astner of Rockville, MD, and Alberta D Murray of Arlington, TX; two grandsons, Benjamin M Murray and Scott A Murray, and a great granddaughter, Elise Nicole Murray, of Arlington, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Louise, and her son Michael William.
