James P. Ungaro, 89, of Las Vegas, passed away Jan. 29, 2006. He was born June 10, 1916, in Norwich, N.Y., and resided in Nevada for 61 years. He was a casino executive and served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II. Jim moved to Las Vegas at the end of World War II, with his wife Betty, for work in the gaming industry. He dealt roulette and 21 at the Sahara, was on the floor at the Hilton and assistant casino manager at the Frontier before retiring in 1980. In the 1950's, he donated his carpentry and masonry skills to help build St. Anne School and St. Anne Church. A passionate, accomplished pilot, Jim, with Betty, owned Vegas Flyers at McCarran Airport for 25 years. While flying was his joy, being an involved, caring father, husband and grandfather was his purpose in life. He belonged to the Italian American Club and was a member of the Excell program at UNLV. He was preceded in death by his wife, of 50 years, Betty J.; and son, James C. (Giac) Ungaro. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Dena; daughters, Laura and Mary; sons, Mark C. (Marcellina) and Rock C. (Theresa); 10 grandsons; six granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, and vigil following from 6-7 p.m., at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Friday, Feb. 3, at St. Anne Church at Maryland Parkway and St. Louis Ave.
