Margaret Vail was born 1801 in the New Market section of Piscataway, Middlesex County, NJ one of 10 known children born to William Vail and his (2nd) wife Jemima Cole.

She was the paternal grandchild of David Vail & Phebe Jackson of Greenbrook, Somerset Co, and gr-grandchild of John Vail, Jr. (1708-1750) and Margaret Liang, the patriarch of the NJ Branch of Vails, Quakers who came from Westchester County, NY in the first quarter of the 1700's. On her mother's side, she was the maternal grandchild of James Cole and Elizabeth Frazee of Scotch Plains.

Margaret married John Acken of Westfield around 1818 and removed to New Brunswick where John would be active in business and politics and amass a good fortune. They would become parents of 3 known children, although others were most likely born: Sarah Ann Acken HOWELL,(1819-1895), William Henry Acken (1833-1906), and Isabella Acken MOTT (1829-1913), wife of Rev. George Scudder Mott, DD (1829-1901).

Margaret was widowed in 1862 when her husband of some 44 years passed at age 66. She survived him another 18 years, passing in 1888 at age 79.
