VAN CROW
I came very near leaving here in 1894, when it looked like we were all going to starve to death. I had a house in Estelline and when Will Trott came there to start a newspaper, I sold it to him, furniture and all. My wife was out in the country and when I went out and told her she wanted to know why I sold the furniture. I told her we were moving back to Tennessee, but she said: "I don't want to move to Tennessee, I am not going to leave Hall County." So we stayed. Times got worse, every thing dried up, and I did not see how we were to live. But people kept coming in and having houses built and I built houses and wind mill towers and made $500 the next year. I built 60 houses around Estelline and Newlin, many of which are still standing. When the 62 Headquarters burned 1 rebuilt it and also built the new lodge for Col. Hughes at Estelline. We had good lumber to work with. I built a large house for Bro. T. R. Garrott about this time, and Sam Cooper tore it down in 1939 to erect a house on his farm near Hulver. The lumber was nearly all in good condition after 40 years of service. Yesterday in Hall County, Texas by Inez Baker 1940
