Elaine J. Van Hoozen, 79, of Hebron, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at Mercy Harvard Care Center in Harvard.

She was born July 7, 1930, in Hebron, to the late Noah E. and Anna (Nyboer) Cates. She was married to Dr. Edward Van Hoozen on Sept. 17, 1955, in Alden.

She was a graduate of Alden High School, earned her Bachelor of Arts at Whitewater College and her master's degree in education at Northwestern University. She taught in Evanston Township, then Crystal Lake High School, and then Alden-Hebron High School, retiring in 1977.

She was a member of the Illinois Teachers Association.

She was a member of Alden United Methodist Church in Alden. She was a member of the Hebron Service Club, the Hebron Food Pantry and the Hebron Public Library for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Edward Van Hoozen; two sons, Brian Lynn (Kathlene) Van Hoozen of Seymour, Wis., and Brent (Chi Mae) Van Hoozen of Roseville, Calif.; three grandsons, Brian Lynn Van Hoozen Jr., Christopher James Van Hoozen and Calvin Van Hoozen.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Cates.

The visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the memorial service at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, at Alden United Methodist Church, 16532 Route 173 in Alden. The Rev. Diana Otterbacher will officiate. Family and friends are invited for luncheon and fellowship immediately after in the church basement. There will be private family inurnment.
