Ruby Rozella Black

Wenatchee

After a short illness, Ruby Rozella Black, 97, a longtime resident of Wenatchee, died of cancer August 13, 2005, in her condo surrounded by her loving family.

On a cold January 14th in the year of 1908, a diminutive four-pound baby girl was delivered to Mary and Ira Walker in Burdett, Missouri.

Ruby taught school from 1926-1928. On December 24, 1928, she married Harley B. Black and they were together for 64 years. After farming in Missouri for a number of years, they headed West, arriving in Waterville, WA in August of 1937. In 1941, she and Harley moved to Wenatchee where she was a homemaker, a fruit worker and in 1951, became a cook at Lincoln Elementary School until she retired in 1972. In 1951, Ruby along with other classified employees, initiated an early effort to organize and establish a bargaining unit for school employees. This took a lot of courage!

On her 97th birthday, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees honored Ruby and expressed their gratitude for her many years as an active member and supporter of the Retired Public Employees Council of Washington State.

Ruby enjoyed traveling and visiting her family. She had many interests--quilting, doing crafts, cooking and was a dedicated Sonics and Mariner fan. Each daughter, grandchild and great-grandchild received one of her hand-made quilts. She was member of the Wenatchee Brethren Baptist Church. She was deeply loved and will be missed by her family and many dear friends.

Ruby is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Dorothy and William Walker, Richland, WA, Cleo and Charles Hammill, Bend, OR and Ellen and Arnold Andres, Vancouver, WA. She is also survived by five grandchildren and their spouses; Craig and Dede Walker, Jacksonville, FL, Gary and Maria Walker of Phoenix, AZ, Todd and Jean Walker of Carlsbad, CA., Lori and Troy Gradwohl, Vancouver, WA and Chad and Stephanie Andres of Boise, ID; and eight great-grandchildren; plus many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 19, 2005.

Viewing will be from 12 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 18, 2005.

Arrangements made by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the American Heart Assoc., American Cancer Society and Central Washington Hospital Home Health and Hospice. Ruby's family would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to all those associated with the Wenatchee Hospice for their tender loving care and support.
