The Barnhart's moved from Minnesota to Washington with Phillip arriving first in 1887 and Margaret following in 1888 with the two eldest children.
They described the move this way: "Came from Minnesota to Seattle on train, to Whatcom on boat,
to Lynden on a lumber wagon." They settled in Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington where they had a farm, and were members of the "Clam Diggers' Association."
Phillip died tragically on June 19, 1912, struck by lightening.
Margaret continued to live in the area and died August 23, 1940.
