Dorothy was born June 8, 1915, in Worcester MA to Ralph and Anne (Ellis) Ward. She married Alfred McNeil at Star of the Sea Church in East Boston on Nov. 24, 1940, where they lived until moving to West Roxbury in 1958. Alfred was a member of the Boston Police Department and during that time Dorothy was an active member of the Boston Police Wives Association. He preceded her in death in 1984.
In 1988 Dorothy left Boston and moved into the Laurel Oaks Apartments at Prince of Peace Retirement Community in Sioux Falls SD to be near her son who was then Chaplain there. While a resident there she served as one of the first Eucharistic Ministers of Communion and Lectors. She loved to sew and made many of the altar cloths and appointments at the chapel at Prince of Peace. She also loved to bake and to grow plants. She had an extensive collection of teddy bears which she had asked to be given to the children's ward at McKennan Hospital. She will always be remembered as being very faithful in remembering peoples' special days by sending them birthday, get well, and anniversary cards.
Wife of the late Alfred McNeil, formerly of the Boston Police Department. Mother of Fr. Frank McNeil of Sioux Falls. Sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Rita and Walter McNeil of Reading MA, and Constance "Connie" McNeil of Winthrop MA. Also survived by many nieces and nephews, her special friends Peggy and Dick Faulkner of Reading MA, and many dear friends in South Dakota and Massachusetts.
