Eva-9 Estelle was the daughter of Charles-8 Adelbert Warner and Sabra (Wyman) Ames.

1 WARNER sibling: LaVerne A. Warner (1873-1942).

Eva married 1) Frederick Freedom "Fred" Baker (1871-1981) on September 29, 1896 in Grand Rapids, Kent, MI. Divorced before 1902.

"They lived in Middleville, [Barry Co.,] Michigan when my grandfather Fred Baker was born. Apparently, they had a big falling out. My Great-grandfather (Freedom Baker) took my Grandfather Fred (Papa) Baker (who was a baby, about a year old) away from Eva and went off to Chicago. I believe this event happened near a bridge in Middleville, MI. Eva filed for divorce and it was uncontested by Freedom. I'm pretty sure that Pius and Fred Skarich can verify this info as I am sure they may have heard it from Aunt Florence. As I may have mentioned, I don't think Fred (Papa) ever saw his Mom again, but he really seemed to think a lot of his step sisters and brother (Pearl, Ward, etc.) and they really liked him."

Eva died Oct. 2, 1913.

1 BAKER child:

1. Fred LaVern Baker B-2/6/1898; m. Frances Sieradzka.

It is said that when Fred LaVern Baker was about 1 year old, his dad, Freedom "Fred" Baker took him away from Eva's care.

Another version: "I have fuzzy memories of being told that Freedom took my grandfather, Fred Laverne Baker, away from his grandmother (i.e. Sabra) without court permission."
Source: Fred L. Skarich, 12/17/2014.

Fred may never have seen his mother again. As an adult, Fred visited with his Lawton half-siblings often.

"My grandfather, Fred LaVern Baker, probably did not have much contact with his grandfather Charles Adelbert Warner after he was taken into physical custody by his own father, Freedom. In addition, my grandfather, Fred LaVern Baker, left to be on his own when he was very young. His first "job" was cleaning outhouses for bars in Mishawaka. That had to be a miserable job. Later, he worked as a clam diver along the St. Joseph River. He had a tough childhood and adolescence, but put his life together and had a good life."

"Bill Baker provided me a typed transcription of the hand written letter which Elva sent him. I typed it out verbatim ... warts and all. Bill wrote above the letter that he received it on November 10, 1990. Here it is:

"Dear Bill,

"I will try to get this in the mail soon. A few notes: My Mother's name was Eva Estelle Warner Baker Lawton. She had gold blonde hair and blue eyes and Lynn says she was about 5 feet 7 inches tall. Uncle Laverne was as dark as she was fair. He must have been 6 feet tall. Our Grandmother Sabra was a widow when she married Grampa. Later, she married John Detwiler.

"My father Ernest Charles Lawton and Mother and Grandfather Warner are buried in Caledonia (not sure of spelling) I believe Grandma was too. No stone.

"There is a David Warner buried in Alaska which is near there. Jerry and I found it. I think it was a long time ago.

"Mother had a cousin Don Warner that lived in Lansing. I knew his daughter Nellie. She looked a lot like my sister Lucy. Just under 5 feet, but hair, eyes, and figure the same.

"John and Don Warner were sons of Calvin, Granpa's brother. I was told that mother was born near Williamston, Michigan in Ingham county. That's all I know.

"I hope this is what you are looking for. Oh yes, there is a book about the [Good] Knight William Marshall that I've read, but I can't remember the name. It was very interesting. I think it was a gothic novel.

"Sorry to take so long. I've had laser on my right eye and another test and it came out real well. When I write a lot, my fingers cramp and I tend to scribble. Hope you can make it out. I know there's more. They printed some, but I don't know how to get it. I would like one, too. My cousin Russel[l] Warner, son of John, died in 1981 [1980]. He was the one that did so much to gather much information. Hope you find it as interesting as I did. I know it isn't much, but halfs are more relation than steps and I've had both. Two stepmothers. I'll take halves any day. Good luck in your search.

Sincerely,
Elva Pearl Payn"
