George Mercer Watson Jr., age 86 of Monroe, passed away January 26, 2011 at Ashlar of Newtown. Mr. Watson was born in Bridgeport to the late George and Gladys (Beers) Watson . He graduated from Kent School in 1944 and received his degree in Accounting and Business Admin. from Bryant College in 1948. He attended classes at the Univ. of Bridgeport. Mr. Watson proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. His family purchased a farm around 1939 where he spent his childhood and returned with his family in 1959. He retired from Read's Dept Store and was previously affiliated with Watson 's Dept. Store. He was very active in many civic, social and church organizations in Nichols and Monroe serving as past chairman of Board of Tax Review in Monroe, past chairman of Retail Div. of Chamber of Commerce in Bridgeport and past president of Fairfield Fish and Game Club. He enjoyed his friends at the Monroe Senior Center where he volunteered for many years. He loved to fish, hunt and competitive skeet shooting. Mr. Watson also raised Basset Hounds with the help of his wife. Survivors include his beloved wife, Marcella Isabel Watson of 63 years; one son, Randall W. Watson of Milford; two granddaughters, Courtney Watson of Milford and Marcy Watson of Columbus, Ohio; one great-granddaughter, Rose Watson of Columbus Ohio; one brother, Elbridge Watson of Stratford; two sisters-in-law, Joan B. Watson of Shelton and Esther M. Brown of Florida; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Donald B. Watson ; a grandson, Shawn Watson ; and a brother, Robert Watson .
