DEATH RESULTS WHEN P.M. TRAIN HITS AUTO
Mrs. Elizabeth Beem Victim of Accident in Port Huron Saturday Night
Mrs. Elizabeth Beem, for many years a resident of this city, was instantly killed in Port Huron last Saturday night when a Pere Marquette freight backed into the car in which she was riding, demolishing the auto and nearly causing the death of the other occupants. The accident occurred about 9 o'clock.
Mrs. Beem has been staying with her son, J.C. Beem, in Port Huron. The family were moving back to their farm at Abbotsford and were accompanied by Mrs. Beem. James Click of Port Huron was engaged to take them to the farm. After starting with his party the auto stalled and Click decided to tow it to his place of business and get another car to continue the trip. As they approached the railroad crossing the gates were down. As the gates were raised they continued but when on the tracks they saw a freight, backing toward the crossing. Just as the touring car reached the tracks, the truck stalled, the freight car hitting the auto broadside, turning it over on its side and carrying it several hundred feet down the track.
Lucile Beem, nine years old, who sat in the rear seat, held tight to one of the top stays of the car and escaped with a few cuts and bruises. James Beem, three years old, was carried about six rods down the track but rolled in the ditch unhurt. When the car was struck Mrs. J.C. Beem was thrown to the pavement and sustained several bruises.
The coroner's jury Monday night held the Pere Marquette and Grand Trunk responsible for not guarding the crossing properly.
The body of Mrs. Beem was brought here Tuesday and the funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the home of her neice [sic], Miss Helen Beem, conducted by Rev. Frank Robinson.
Mrs. Beem was a resident of Fremont for the greater part of the past 43 years. She was born in St. Lawrence county, N.Y., November 5, 1844, and was married to Robert Watson in 1859. Mr. Watson was killed in a skirmish in 1863 while serving in the Civil War. In 1870 she was married to George L. Beem who died in Marine City in November, 1918. She is survived by two sons, L.M. Watson of Algonac and J.C. Beem of Abbotsford.
