Dorothy E. Fisher, 74, of 250 Parkview Heights Road, Ephrata, died Saturday at home after a short illness.

She worked 22 years in beauty culture as an instructor in cosmetology at Bryland Institute of Beauty Culture in Reading and four years as a teacher at Warflynn Beauty College of Washington, D.C.

She operated Dotty's Beauty Shop in Fivepointville for 14 years.

After changing careers, in 1970 she became one of the first nurses in the United States to earn board certification in the new medical specialty of enterostomal therapy.

A graduate of Harrisburg Hospital School of Enterostomal Therapy, she established a new department of enterostomal therapy at Pottsville Hospital and Warne Clinic in Pottsville and served as head of the hospital's stomal surgical department for more than 10 years.

During her time at Pottsville Hospital, the hospital was recognized as the first in the world to employ three full-time enterostomal therapy nurses serving colon and bladder stomal surgical patients.

In 1981, she moved to Boca Raton, Fla., where she worked for 15 years as a private duty nurse for Boca Raton Community Hospital and the Nursing Registry of Palm Beach County.

Fisher was a member of Bible Fellowship Church of Ephrata.

Born in Fivepointville, she was the daughter of Jacob R. Weber of Ephrata and the late Elizabeth Roth Weber.

Surviving besides her father are a daughter, Boni Martin of Ephrata; four granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.
