Loyal "Curt" Welch was born on June 9, 1923, in rural Cedar, Iowa, the son of Frank Garvin and Edna Belle (Black) Welch. Being the youngest of seven sons with a baby sister, life was never quiet around the farm. He learned quick how to defend himself and to respect his elders. He graduated from Cedar High School and was active in basketball.

While he was working at the VA Hospital in Knoxville a young cadet nurse caught his eye and he was never the same. After courting and proposing over a fried chicken picnic, he married Marian Catherine Hoffman on Sept. 16, 1950. They lived their entire married life in Knoxville along with two daughters. He treasured his family and loved yearly vacations, many in Wisconsin with Marian's family.

He was extremely proud to serve in the United States Army in both WW II and Korea with medals to show for his service.

After his service in the army, he started at Maytag and quickly earned the title of "practical jokester". After 30 years and the birth of two beautiful granddaughters, he retired from Maytag. Three years later he FINALLY had some male companionship when his two grandsons were born within a couple of weeks apart. He treasured all of his family the same but there was a special bond between him and his grandsons. Then three years ago the first of two great grandchildren were added to the family. They loved going to see Pa Pa Elch.

Curt was a member of the Methodist Church his entire life. He helped at Knoxville Senior Citizens' Center, helping hands and delivering mail at Westridge Nursing Home.

Curt went in peace to be with the Lord on May 22, 2009, at Park Lane Village in Knoxville, at the age of 85.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years in 2005, six brothers and one sister.

Curt is survived by his daughters, Sandi Candelore (Andy) of Saco, Maine, and Connie Siefkas (Bill) of Knoxville, his grandchildren; Aimee Candelore, Vincent Candelore, Chelsea Smith (Jason), and Alex Wahl; his great grandchildren; Hannah and Titus Smith; his step-grandson, Carl Siefkas; and many other relatives and friends.
