Knoxville Journal Express, newspaper obituary published on 4 October 1905:

Calvin Welch, a prominent merchant and well-known citizen of Knoxville 20-35 years ago, died at the home of (?) Fletcher, near Olive Chapel, ten miles south of town, on Wednesday, Sept 27, aged 54 years, 7 months and 8 days. Death resulted from a second stroke of apoplexy, which seized him while at church the previous Sunday. He had been staying with the family of his brother, James Welch, in Indiana township, for the past two months, and was not able to be removed to their home after the death stroke of Sunday past.
He was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Feb 19, 1851, and when a baby removed with his parents, James and Jane Welch, to this county, where he spent all of his childhood and young manhood days. After reaching his majority he came to Knoxville and embarked in the grocery trade and conducted a successful business until 1883 or 1884, when he removed to the west coast and was long identified with similar interests at Seattle, Whatcom and other places in Washington; also, at Oak Harbor on an island in Puget Sound. About 1897 or 1898 he made a trip to Klondike regions but was taken down with rheumatism and returned to the states. After his return he settled at Woodlucs, Oregon, where he assisted his brother Albert in a store, and from there went to Grant's Pass, in the same state, and started in the clothing and shoe business. He was stricken with apoplexy early last summer and came here about two months ago after partially recovering from the first attack of the ailment.
He was never married. The near relatives are: His sisters, Mrs. John McMillan of Pacific Grove, Cal., and Ms. Chas. Bender, of Knoxville township; the brothers are Thompson Welch, Pacific Grove, Cal.; Albert Welch, of Portland, Oregon, and James Welch, of Indiana township, this county.
The funeral services were held at Olive Chapel at 10 a.m. Thursday, conducted by Revs. Tague and Burma. Interment in Graceland Cemetery.
