Thomas first enlisted in Co. D, 2nd Ohio Infantry, serving a 90-day enlistment as a Private from April to August 1861. In October 1861, he reenlisted, as 1st Sergeant of Co. A of the 75th Ohio Infantry. SGT Wheeler was captured and exchanged by the Confederate forces at 2nd Bull Run. He subsequently received promotions to 2nd Lieutenant and then 1st Lieutenant of Co. A.

On 1 July 1863, on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, LT Wheeler was first shot thru the wrist and refused to leave the field; was then hit in the groin, and before he could be removed from the field, he was hit a third time, in the spine. He was taken to the George Spangler Farm/11th Corps Hospital, where he died 27 days later, on 28 July 1863.

LT Wheeler was promoted to the rank of Captain prior to his death, but was not mustered in. His body was shipped home by train and buried at the Ingomar ME Church Cemetery.
