DOROTHY JANE WOLCOTT, 1912-2005 Active volunteer served cultural, arts organizations
Dorothy Jane Wolcott, 92, a volunteer for cultural and community groups who worked in the gift shop at the Toledo Museum of Art, died Aug. 27 in the Kingston Care Center, Sylvania.
The cause of death was not known. She had congestive heart failure and emphysema, her daughter, Beverly Wolcott, said.
Mrs. Wolcott, formerly of South Toledo, started her daughter in dance at the Toledo Ballet as a child and, in turn, joined the ballet's auxiliary. She was an active volunteer in the 1950s and 1960s. She belonged to the Toledo Opera Guild for several years and served as an officer.
She also helped with fund-raising efforts for the Ability Center and the Toledo Animal Shelter. "She felt it was important to give time to causes like that. She enjoyed working with people," her daughter said.
Mrs. Wolcott worked at the shop in the art museum from the late 1960s into the early 1980s. Her husband, Charles, was a Toledo district fire chief, but also a co-owner of the Town Gallery on Adams Street. She often planned opening receptions for artists exhibiting at the gallery.
Mrs. Wolcott was born in North Baltimore, Ohio, the daughter of Minnie and C.L. Van Brimer. The family moved to Perrysburg, where her father ran a hardware store for many years. She was a graduate of Perrysburg High School.
As a young woman, she worked at Lamson Bros. Department Store and a shop that carried attire for ballet dancers. In the 1950s and 1960s, she performed in plays with local groups, including the Toledo Repertoire Little Theatre. "She had a little bit of a theatrical bent, so the local venues suited her," her daughter said. "It was something she had fun with."
Mrs. Wolcott was a friend of Charles and Ruth Hayes, who had a Perrysburg travel agency, and in the 1970s led groups - often high school senior classes - on tours of New York City arranged by the Hayeses. She and her husband took several Caribbean cruises and liked to visit Key West, Fla., for several weeks in the spring. She was a golfer and a member of Brandywine Country Club.
She'd been with some card groups for several decades, and stopped playing bridge in the 1990s. She and her family spent summers at their cottage on Long Lake near Alpena, Mich., as her husband had since he was 12. "She was a fun person, always ready to be with the crowd and to enjoy whatever she was taking part in," her daughter said.
Mrs. Wolcott and her husband married June 18, 1939. He died Sept. 25, 1993. Surviving is her daughter, Beverly Wolcott.
There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at Park Church, of which she was a member. Arrangements are by the Bersticker-Scott Mortuary. The family suggests tributes to the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, the Toledo Animal Shelter Association, or the Ability Center.
