She was educated in the Franklin County Public Schools. At an early age she became a member of Nelson Chapel Baptist Church in Louisburg, N.C. Upon moving to Newport News, V.A. She joined Zion Baptist Church where she was a faithful member of the E. R. Peyton Bible Class and an original member of the Senior Gleaners until her health failed.
She was married to the late Odell Yarborough and from this union five daughters were born.
She leaved to cherish so many special memories, her husband, Oliver Cromwell; her loving daughters, Shirley Y. Perry (Billy), Ella B. Yarborough, Carolyn Y. Lockett (Barry), Brenda A. Yarborough, and Geraldine Y. Stith (Anthony); six grandchildren, Shannon, Terrance (Jennifer), Anthony, Billy, Shaun, and Tanisha; three great-grandchildren, Trinity, Skyler, and Jordan; a brother, Shelley Massenburg (Naomi); two sisters, Hattie M. Stokes, and Julia M. Silver; three stepchildren, Joy, Ramie, and Gay Cromwell; a special caretaker, Lolita Harrison, and a host of many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Viewing will be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, September 18, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held 12 noon Monday, September 19, at Zion Baptist Church, 633 20th Street, Newport News, VA. with Dr. L. T. Daye, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are asked to assemble at 1401 Victoria Blvd., Hampton, VA by 11 a.m. Monday.
