Visitation will be held on Monday, February 1, 2016 at Ballard Family Mortuary Kahului from 10:00a.m.-12:00p.m. With burial to follow at Maui Veteran’s Cemetery, 1:00p.m.
Mona was born on September 4, 1932 in Paukukalo, Maui. She attended St.Anthony School and graduated in 1951. She was the Vice President of her senior class. Mona was crowned Miss Aloha Maui in 1951 and cut the ribbon to open the tunnel to Lahaina.
On April 8, 1954, Roland and Mona were married in Buffalo, New York, where they raised their four children. Her husband, a pilot with USAir retired in 1986. They returned to Maui to enjoy their golden years.
Mona had a passion for gardening and painting and lived life to the fullest.
She is survived by five sisters, Phyllis (Ron) Kriese, Betty-Jane (Charles) Schrader, Theresa (Patrick) Chun, Marilyn Knecht, Paula (Mike) Sylva and two brothers, Gordon (Diana) Yen and Al (Lillian) Yen. Mona was predeceased by her father, Gregory A.H. Yen and mother Mary (Medevedo) Yen, and brother Melvin (Emmi) Yen.
The past year and a half, Mona and Jim’s niece Lisa Espero has been instrumental in being with and caring for her aunt and uncle.
