Antonio Modesto was born on September 8, 1823 in Trinidad, Cuba. He was the son of Jose Antonio Iznaga - Borrell and Maria Francisca del Valle - Castillo, and was baptized on December 28, 1823 at Parraquial Mayor de Trinidad, Cuba.

He was educated in the United States and circa 1847 permanently immigrated and became a U.S. Naturalized Citizen on January 29, 1849. Like all the Iznagas that immigrated from Cuba to the U.S. during this time period, Antonio officially changed the spelling of his father's surname from "Iznaga" to "Yznaga." He also continued to use his mother's maiden name of "del Valle"... representing himself thereafter as "Yznaga del Valle" or sometimes simply as "Yznaga." On August 4, 1849, Antonio Modesto married Ellen Maria Clement in Providence, Rhode Island. They resided in New York but would make occasional trips to Ellen's Ravenswood plantation in Louisiana.

"ANTONIO YZNAGA DEL VALLE
Antonio Yznaga del Valle died in his apartment at the Lenox, Fifth avenue and Thirty-sixth street, at half-past eleven o'clock yesterday morning from kidney disease and malaria, after an illness of ten days. He suffered from a severe attack of a similar nature about eighteen months ago. Fernando Yznaga, his son; Jose del Valle, his nephew, and Mrs. Jose del Valle were at his bedside when he died. Mr. Yznaga was born in Cuba, September 8, 1823. He was descended from an old Castilian family that went to Cuba many generations ago, and his father, a wealthy sugar planter, sent him to this city to be educated, and after passing several years in the schools here he returned to Cuba. In 1847, his uncle, Antonio Modesto del Valle one of the wealthiest sugar planters in Cuba, established him as a sugar commission merchant at No. 60 Beaver street, under the firm name of Yznaga del Valle & Co. He continued in business until 1878, when he retired, his estates in Porto Rico, Cuba and Louisiana requiring his attention. He married Ellen Clement, only daughter of Dr. Clement, of Baltimore. The children are Fernando Yznaga, a member of the firm of H. B. Hollins & Co., bankers and brokers, No. 15 Wall street, who married, first, Virginia Smith, sister of Mrs. W. K. Vanderbilt, and afterward Miss Mabel Wright; Consuelo, whose marriage in 1876 to Viscount Mandeville, now Duke of Manchester, was a notable event in society; Natividad, who was married to Sir John Lister Kaye in 1882, and Emily, who is unmarried and is visiting her sister, the Duchess of Manchester. Mr. and Mrs. Yznaga went to England last fall and three weeks ago returned to New Orleans from Cuba. Mrs. Yznaga, who is an invalid, was unable to continue the journey to this city, and is still in New Orleans." Obituary - New York Herald, Saturday, May 7, 1892
