Irene Theresa Zuk, nee Kowalski, formerly of Broadview, died on March 16, 2014, at the age of 95 years, 11 months, and 12 days.

Thirty days after the death of her father, Irene was born in Chicago on April 4, 1918, the daughter of Andrew & Frances (nee Lukasik) Kowalski.

Loving mother of the late John (& the late Beverly Appa), Peter (Georgine Baran) & James.

Cherished grandmother of Christopher (Gail Tewarie), Jonathan (Jennifer Gersch), Andrew (Margaret McDonald), Joseph (Kathleen Osinski), James “J.J.” & Michelle (Jon) Russell.

Proud great-grandmother of Jaden & Jodie.

Fond aunt of the late Catherine (& the late Walter) Lisowski, Mary Jane Mills, David (Rose Marie) Herda, Nancy (James) Kulik, Elmer “Bud” (Dolores) Herda; the late Danny (Carol) Koch, the late Jerry (Kathy) Koch, Tom (Pat) Koch & Mary (& the late Denis) Mroczek.

Great-aunt to many, many nieces & nephews.

Irene was predeceased by her husband John, her son John & all her siblings & their spouses: Mary (Elmer) Herda, Pauline “Polly” (George) Hier, Clarence “Leo” (Betty) Kowalski & Joseph (Pearl) Kowalski. As the youngest of 10 children, Irene was also preceded in death by 5 infant siblings who were born & died in Poland: Andrew, twins Helen & Sofia, an unnamed baby girl and Anthony.

Irene retired from the Mars/M&M candy company in 1980; and had been a very active parishioner of St. Eulalia’s Catholic Church in Maywood, where she had been a member for over 55 years. She had been a resident of Brighton Gardens in St. Charles since September 2009.

A special thank you to the compassionate and caring staff of Brighton Gardens and Harbor Light Hospice. The loving kindness you have given our mom has truly lightened our load.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 E. Main Street, St. Charles, IL 60174. Visitation will be 8:30-9:30 A.M. Wednesday at Yurs Funeral Home 405 E. Main St., St. Charles, IL, 60174. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Justice, IL. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Harbor Light Hospice 800 Roosevelt Road, Ste C 206, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137.
