Alexander Christopher Bearshield, 2, and four-year-old Angelica Christina Alcaraz were both killed in the Monday morning blaze that moved quickly through their home and spread to another house and a duplex before being contained. The Woodbury County medical examiner said the children apparently died of smoke inhalation in the fire that started about 1 p.m. Hanson said Felipe Alcaraz rented the house with his girlfriend, Cruz Medina, and lived there with their six children. One of the boys was in school and Alcaraz was not home at the time of the fire. Medina managed to get out of the house with three of the children who were not hurt. Medina was treated and released at a local hospital for smoke inhalation. Hanson said the children who died apparently were caught upstairs.

Combustible material too close to an electric space heater has been cited as the cause of a Sioux City house fire which claimed the lives of two children Oct. 28. The Sioux City Fire Department released its finding Tuesday on the fire which destroyed the home at 1621 W. Fourth St., and heavily damaged the two houses on either side. Lt. Mark Hanson of the city's Fire Prevention Bureau, said the fire destroyed so much of the scene that investigators could not be certain exactly what came in contact with the space heater, but the flames quickly spread to a nearby sofa. There could have been something combustible between the space heater and the sofa, Hanson said. Four-year-old Angelica Christina Alcaraz and her brother, 2-year-old Alexander Bearshield-Alcaraz died of smoke inhalation in the blaze. One adult and five children were in the house at the time of the fire. The adult was treated at a local hospital and released. The two children who died were apparently trapped upstairs when the fire erupted, according to fire department reports at the time. They were the children of Felipe Alcaraz and Anna Lisa Bearshield of Sioux City.
