US Congressman. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Legislature in 1826 and to the Constitutional Convention of 1837. He was elected to represent Pennsylvania's 4th and 8th Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1841 to 1845. He then served as an associate judge for Lancaster from 1851 to 1856. Like many Quakers, he was an abolitionist. Like other stations on the Underground Railroad, his house had a secret passage where African-American stayed on their way north. Later, Brown's brother-in-law, Timothy Haines, continued providing a station on the Underground Railroad.
