Financier. Philanthropist. He was partner in Drexel and Company as well as both Baring Brothers in London and Rothschild et Fis in Paris. He owned a 200 acre farm near New York City, where the unemployed were fed, clothed, and educated, until they could find work. He developed land in Maryland into a planned community, with lots sold to the poor at cost. The same was done with 7,000 acres of land in Michigan.
