Seaman Apprentice, USS Menges (DE-320), US Coast Guard. Son of Roy L. Elaman and Winnie Ann Carter Elaman; husband of Pauline Elaman. Home of record: Greenbrier, TN. Entered the service from Kentucky. Killed in action when the destroyer escort USS Menges was attacked by a German submarine while serving on convoy duty off the coast of North Africa. Though the aft third of the ship was destroyed, killing 31 men and wounding 25, heroic action by the crew kept her from sinking.
