Daughter of Frank and Ruth Coatney Smith, Wife of Harry Augustus Hughes and then later Francis Suttle Hughes, mother of Mary Beth Anders, Francis Stephen, Janice Talley, Judy Herrington, and David Craig. We buried her on her 80th birthday.
Mama was born fighting for her life. She was born two months premature weighing about 2 lbs. Her identical twin sister, Velma Irene, only lived a few hours. Grandma was 16 at the time and gave birth at home. Mama related stories to me passed down from her mother about that first year. As tiny as she was, her skin was thin and translucent. She was so fragile her mother carried her on a pillow. She often had seizures, frightening her young mother so badly that she would gather up baby, pillow and all and take out running across the low hills to her mother. Grandma had 7 more babies after Mama's birth, so Mama helped take care of her siblings and even helped deliver some of them. Her Mom died at 32 in childbirth, leaving a big responsibility to a 16 year old girl. Mama's siblings are Doris Arlene, b 1928, brother James Ellis, b. 1929, Mary Belle, b. 1931, Betty Sue b. 1933, Winona Ruth, b. 1936, Frankie Naomi, b. 1940 and the baby girl who was stillborn in 1942, just before her mother died.
Now Mama and her twin are reunited, almost 80 years to the day after they were seperated.
I miss her. Our relationship was not always the best, but the last two years were good ones. We were blessed to be able to bond like that, before it was too late. A lifetime is so short. Where did it go?
I am blessed to know that it is not over. We will be reunited in the blood of Jesus, sooner than I can imagine. All the discord, all the tears, all the worldly things will be passed away. All things will be new. No more arthritis, no more shortness of breath, no more pain. I am looking forward to it!
