Nancy Jane was the daughter of Andrew Jackson and Rebecca Elizabeth Reagan McCasland. She was the wife of Lawson S. Hughes and the mother of William Andrew Jackson Hughes, Alice Knipe, Henrietta Banister, James Reagan Hughes (who died at 2 years of age) and Walter McCasland Hughes. She died at the age of 29 from A tuberculin type disease of the lungs, after 10 years of marriage. Her youngest child, Walter, was 14 months old at the time of her death. It is told that before her death, she asked her husband to marry Lucy Fitzwater, who had come into the home to care for Nancy and the children during Nancy's illness. He did so four months after Nancy Jane's death. Nancy was my greatgrandmother. Her headstone simply says, N.J., wife of L.S. Hughes. Weep not for she is at rest.
