Mathies, Marvin C.

Marvin C. Mathies age 96, a Manitowoc resident, received the promise of eternal life with his Lord and Savior early Friday morning, December 6, 2013 at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc.

Marvin was born July 27, 1917 in the town of Cooperstown, son of the late Carl and Louisa (Seiltz) Mathies. He attended St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran School at Maribel and graduated from Denmark High School in 1937. Marvin also attended the Manitowoc Business College, Vocation and ICS Correspondence Classes and the Dale Carnegie Class.

On August 31, 1940 Marvin was married to the former Pearl H. Gadeke at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Chicago, IL. Pearl preceded Marvin in death on June 13, 2012. Marvin served his country during WWII as a Staff Sergeant of the United States Army. He served as a secretary to Commandant "Iron Mike" O'Daniel at Fort Benning, GA. Marvin was employed for over fifty years with Kaufman Mfg. Co. serving as secretary to the president, cost accountant and retiring as alderman of the former 14th ward.

Marvin was the last surviving charter member of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church and served his congregation in the past as Sunday school teacher, member of stewardship committee, church council, deacon, elder, and treasurer. He also was a lifetime volunteer as a part of the offering accounting system. Marvin was also a past member of the Manitowoc Senior Center.

Survivors include one brother-in-law and one sister-in-law: Russell (Marion) Gadeke of Bensenville, IL; two cousins: Ruth Mathies and Elma Mathies of Chicago, IL; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3209 Meadow Lane, Manitowoc. The Revs. Robert Kujawski and Stephen Melso will officiate with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. A memorial fund has been established in Marvin's name for Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church. The family would like to thank Emilie Luebke and the staff's of Laurel Grove and Shady Lane Nursing Care Center for all the wonderful and patient care shown to Marvin and to all who visited him while living there. What was first in Marvin and Pearl's life was their love for each other and especially their love for the Lord Jesus thru regular means of grace in the word and sacrament.
