Son of Capt John McClanahan and Margaret "Peggy" Black Wright, Monroe McClanahan was the 17th child of Capt. John McClanahan who headed Company B, 83rd Illinois Infantry during the Civil War.

After John's death, Monroe enlisted in Company A, 138th Illinois Infantry on May 30, 1864 and served until October 14th, 1864. He served under his brother, Capt. William Steele McClanahan.

He was survived by 2 sons; William and Nelson Rankin McClanahan, and 1 granddaughter; Jeanne McClanahan.
