Vess R. Miller, 42, retired Army captain and former Manitowoc resident, died
unexpectedly early Monday morning at Stevens Point.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Methodist Church,
Granton, with burial at 3 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. The Otto Oas
Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will provide military rites at graveside.
Mr. Miller was born Aug. 6, 1917, at Beulah, N.D. He joined the Civilian Con-
servation Corps in North Dakota and served with the U.S. Army from 1934 to 1937.
Following discharge, he was employed by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc., and
Brooklyn Navy Yard, N.Y.
In 1943, he re-entered the Army and served until retirement. He was a sergeant
major at the time he left the Army but retired as a captain, the rank which he
held until 1954. He married Vlasta Cherney July 20, 1940, at Pascagoula, Miss.
She is a native of Manitowoc.
Surviving are his wife, a son, an adopted daughter (Private); parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Ira E. Miller of Granton, Wis.; two sisters, Mrs. Everet Meek of Nashua,
Mont., and Mrs. Cora Guy of Granton; and four brothers, David of Milwaukee,
Douglas of Chicago, Ira Jr., of Kansas city, Mo., and Richard of Anchorage,
Alaska.
