Mr. Needham William Morris was born in Barnwell District, South Carolina, on January 17, 1819. He moved to Richmond County, Ga. on January 1, 1838. He married his first wife Elizabeth Brandon, June 17, 1841, in Richmond County, Georgia. He was a farmer by trade in rural Richmond County. Ante Bellum, Needham and Elizabeth had following children: John B. Morris, Thomas Rudolph Morris, Virginia Morris, Christopher Columbus Morris, Georgia Anna Morris, Edna Frances Morris, Joseph Osborne Morris, Josephine Almeda Morris and Needham William Morris Jr. When the Civil War began, he joined Company C, 28th Georgia Volunteer Infantry under General Ambrose Ransom "Rans" Wright's Brigade, Confederate States Army. He was at the Battle of South Mills in North Carolina in April 1862. In May, his regiment traveled to Virginia and fought in the Battle of Seven Pines. Wright's Georgia Brigade made a distinguished record in the Army of Northern Virginia in the battles of Seven Days Battles, Siege of Petersburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. At the Battle of Gettysburg, Wright's brigade, part of Maj. Gen. Richard H. Anderson's division of Lt. Gen. A.P. Hill's Corps, had the distinction of penetrating the farthest into the Union defenses on Cemetery Ridge on July 2, 1863.

Needham's Civil War documents are as follows:

Collier at James Island, South Carolina.

6) The clothing receipt roll for Company C, 28th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, dated June 30, 1864, states Needham Morris as receiving clothing.

7) The roll of Prisoners of War, dated May 15, 1865, states that all men belonging to Company C, 28th Georgia Volunteer Infantry of the Confederate Army, surrendered in compliance with the terms of a Military Convention made on April 26, 1865, at Bennett's House, Near Durham's Station, North Carolina, between General J.E. Johnston, of the Confederate Armies, and Major General W.T. Sherman, U.S.A, and approved by Lieutenant General U.S. Grant, U.S.A. The men of Company C, 28th Georgia Volunteer Infantry of the Confederate Army were paroled in Augusta, Ga., May 18, 1865.

During the Civil War, Needham's first wife died at home May 3, 1863. After the war he returned home to Georgia to resume his life as a farmer. He married his second wife, Lenora Ann Hughes, August 5, 1868, in Richmond County, Georgia. She was born January, 1852 in Richmond County, Ga. They moved to Columbia County around 1866 near Belair, Ga. Lenora and Needham had the following children: Joshua M. Morris, Ella Virginia Morris, James Daniel Morris, Edward Morris, Solomon Morris, Elijah E. Morris, Sarah Frances Morris, Maggie Marie Morris and Martin Eugene Morris. In later years his health began to fail and he was unable to work. He applied for his Civil War pension in the following years:

1) January 16, 1897-Questions for Witness, William M. Williams, 1945 Broad St., Augusta, Ga., states that he has know Needham for 20 years and served with him in the war, he was a good soldier and that Mr. Williams enlisted in the Army in March 1862 at Gettysburg, Penn. in Company C, 28th Regular Georgia Volunteers.

5) January 14, 1901, Applied for Indigent Soldiers Pension in Columbia County, Georgia.

6) January 1, 1902, Applied for Indigent Soldiers Pension in Columbia County, Georgia. About three weeks after applying for his pension in 1902, Needham passed away and is buried in Marvin Methodist Church cemetery in Columbia County, Ga. His grave is the oldest in the cemetery.

I suspect his father to be William A. Morris, Barnwell County, South Carolina, but I cannot verify it.

Inscription:
He was the father of a large family for many years. Asleep in Jesus. Far from thee, thy kindred and their graves may be; but there is still a blessed sleep from which none ever wakes to weep.

I never knew you Grandpa, but you gave me a wonderful Daddy. Rest in Peace until we meet at Jesus feet.
