Madison Shannon Palmer of Marks, 86, died Tuesday, September 30, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi at Oxford.

Services were at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, at Silent Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Marks with the Rev. Ezra Towner, Jr. officiating. Burial followed at Belmont Cemetery. Delta Burial of Marks had charge of arrangements.

Born June 19, 1922, in Alcorn, he was the youngest of 11 children born to the late George Palmer, Sr. and Evelyn Washington Palmer. Mr. Palmer received his education at Alcorn A & M College. He attended Alcorn Laboratory Elementary, high school and college. He received his B.S. degree from Alcorn in 1947. Laer, he received his Master's degree from Indiana University. He began his professional career in education at Rose Hill High School in Rose Hill. He came to Marks in 1950 as principal of Marks Industrial High School. When the schools consolidated in 1960, Mr. Palmer served as the first principal of Quitman Industrial High School (later Quitman County High School). In May 1998, the Quitman County District honored Mr. Palmer by renaming the high school in his honor, Madison Shannon Palmer High School. He served Quitman County Schools as a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent. Additionally, he rendered service at the Quitman County Health Department and worked after retirement at Delta Burial Association until his health failed. He served in the U.S. Army for four years, receiving an honorable discharge on January 7, 1946.

While at Alcorn he met the girl of his dreams, Marguereitte Bradley. The two married on June 5, 1946, and two children, Madison Shannon Palmer, Jr., and Sandra Palmer, were born to the couple. His wife preceded him in death.

His life of love and giving will be missed by many, but the memories of unyielding devotion to his family will be cherished by his two children, Madison Shannon Palmer, Jr. of Chicago, and Sandra P. Douglas of Walfforth, TX; three granddaughters, Danielle Douglas of Columbia, MO, Diedre Douglas of Irving, TX, and Maya Palmer of Sunny Vale, CA; one beloved great-grandson, Donovan Douglas of Irving, TX; one sister, Velma Elliott; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Palmer; three brothers-in-law, James (Bernice) Bradley, George (Catherine) Bradley, and Harry (Laverne) Bradley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
