On October 1, 1896, she married Christian Shafer in Illinois. They farmed in Cullom, Illinois from 1896-1912. In 1912 they migrated to Grant Township, Boone County, Iowa, where they retired in 1939. At that time they moved to Boxholm.
Christian and Emma have six children: Mrs. Charles Leon (Minnie) Ott, Roy L. Ott, Ray A. Ott, Mrs. Jessie (Lillian) Ott, Mrs. Clifford (Emma) Smith and Mrs. Oral (Edna) Powers.

MRS. C. SHAFER DIES AT HOME IN IOWA
Was stricken with Paralysis While Visiting Here Two Years Ago
Mrs. Chris Shafer died at her home in Boxholm, Iowa, Sunday night at the age of 71, following a two-years' illness.
Funeral services were held in Boxholm Wednesday afternoon with burial there.
Mrs. Shafer was born in the Chatsworth neighborhood as Emma Roth and the family resided in this locality until about 30 years ago when they moved to Paton, Iowa and later retired from farming and moved to the village of Boxholm. She was stricken with paralysis while on a visit in Chatsworth in August 1940, and was bedfast thereafter.
Surviving are her husband, two sons, Roy and Raymond, and four daughters, Mrs. Lillian Ott; Mrs. Minnie Ott; Mrs. Edna Powers and Mrs. Clifford Smith, all of the Boxholm community. She is also survived by one brothers, Frank, of Chatsworth, and Ira of Paton, Iowa and one sister, Mrs. O. O. Reed, of Strawn.
Included in those who went from this vicinity to attend the funeral were Frank Roth, of Chatsworth; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Roth and Miss Dorthy Eminger, of Melvin; Mrs. O. O. Reed of Strawn; and Mrs. and Mrs. Ed Shafer of Chatsworth.
