STURGIS CIVIL WAR VET DIES

A.A. Slingerland Had Also Served In Indian War

Albert Allison Slingerland, 85, who marched away to fight in the Civil War at the age of 13, died Wednesday evening at his home 206 North Fourth Street. He had been in failing health for two years and had been seriously ill the past two weeks.

Mr. Slingerland was one of the last two remaining Civil War veterans in Sturgis, the only one now surviving, being Thomas Gunthorpe, __1 North Prpopect Street.

Mr. Slingerland was born March __, 1850, in Almond, N.Y., the son of David and Elizabeth Slingerland. His military career was a colorful one. Enlisting in 1862, he served until the close of the war. Although he was only 13 at the time of his enlistment, he was large for his age and was accepted without objection when he gave his age as several years older.

He served with Company K of the 9th New York Infantry. In the battle of Fair Oaks, VA on May 24, 1862, he had two of fingers shot away. He never regained the use of his hand fully and finally was mustered out of service 21 months later.

FOUGHT INDIANS OVER TWO YEARS
His military career was not yet at an end however. On May 13, 1872, he enlisted in the Indian War and served until January 23, 1875. He was wounded twice during the Indian War. When the "iron horse" replaced the old stage coaches, he secured a job as engineer on the Erie Railroad and worked there for many years. Later, he engaged in farming and also in the real estate business.

He was married August 4, 1876 at Schoolcraft to Miss Mary Lovejoy. Mrs. Slingerland died June 19, 1935.

Mr. Slingerland had made his home in Sturgis for the past 20 years. Prior to that he had lived in Burr Oak for 30 years.

Surviving relatives are four daughters, Mrs. Stanley Mizner, of Dearborn, MI; Mrs. Wilbur Benson and Mrs. Clifford Sheeler, of Sturgis, and Mrs. Marshall Parham, of Detroit; one son, Stuart Slingerland, of Sturgis; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. C.D. Hurd of Pasadena, Calif.

He will be buried with full military honors at 2:30 Saturday afternoon, with Neuman-Wenzel post, American Legion, in charge, and Dr. E.A. Shulls, pastor of the Baptist Church and district chaplin fo the American Legion, officiating. The services will be held from the Keasey Funeral Home with interment in Oaklawn Cemetery
