Walter Elliot Smith enlisted as a Private on 30 July 1862 and was mustered in to Company G, 16th Infantry Regiment Connecticut on 24 August 1862. He was wounded on 17 September 1862 at Antietam, MD He became a POW on 20 April 1864 at Plymouth, NC, and was paroled on 10 December 1864 from Andersonville Prison. He was discharged from Company G, 16th Infantry Regiment Connecticut on 27 May 1865.
