World War II Veteran & Second Lieutenant Ellis Trevilion, Jr., U.S. Army, 22, gave his life while serving with Company G, 2nd Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63rd Infantry Division (ID) near Achen, Germany.

The Marks, MS native was a student & brother of the Mississippi Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) Fraternity at University of Mississippi when he registered for the WWII draft in JUN 1942. Army records show Brother Trevilion joined the service in SEP that year, and this likely coincides with when he became a member of Hood's Brigade (a precursor to ROTC) at the university.

Based on research to-date by the SigEp Patriots Project, Ellis was the 77th SigEp Patriot killed in action during WWII.

Few details are available regarding Ellis' early service. We know he was subsequently assigned to the 63rd ID, and the division trained in the U.S. before being sent to the European Theater of Operations in late 1944. The picture shown in this work from the 1944 Ole Miss yearbook was likely taken in 1942 or 1943.

For his gallantry in action on this date, Brother Trevilion was posthumously awarded the Silver Star.

From the award citation, GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 543 (August 16, 1945)

CITATION:
"The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Ellis A. Trevilion (ASN: 0-558848), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 3 January 1945, in the vicinity of Achen, France. The enemy was blocking part of the town, using two machine guns and rifles. Lieutenant Trevilion took one squad with him on a reconnaissance mission but found they could not move from cover because of the intense enemy fire directed at them. He courageously moved out alone toward the enemy and, firing his carbine at the positions, drew all the enemy fire to himself, enabling the squad to secure good firing positions and to destroy all enemy opposition. In this action Lieutenant Trevilion was killed. His intrepidity throughout the action reflects the highest credit upon himself and is in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States."

Based on research to-date by SPP, Ellis is one of only 66 SigEp Patriots known to have been presented the Silver Star - the nation's third highest medal for valor. His other awards include the Purple Heart.
