George Van Solen was born in Massachusetts in 1835. He lived in Minnesota and Missouri before settling at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Company C, 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment as a Private on 9 September 1861 and was discharged with disability on 18 April 1862. Later, he re-enlisted as a Private in Company G, 6th Minnesota Infantry Regiment on 13 August 1862, He was promoted to Full Private on 1 October 1864 and discharged on 29 May 1865.

The town of Solen, ND, is reportedly named after George and Mary Louisa Van Solen.
