A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service there as a private with Co.D, 126th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company on May 29, 1863. He also enlisted in Chambersburg February 12, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 17 as a private with Battery C, 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (112th Pa), and honorably discharged with his battery January 29, 1866.
He married Anna Mary Elizabeth McKenrick in Carlisle and fathered Charles (b. @1869), George A. (b. 08/03/70), Joseph Leo (b. 1880, d. 02/??/85), Raymond (b. 11/??/82), and Anna Leser (b. 02/??/85). In 1880, he lived in Carlisle where he died at his brother George's home from "senile gangrene - left leg" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor

Leonard died at age 78 at home of his brother George Yeager in Carlisle, after being ill since Thanksgiving.
Most of his life was spent in Carlisle, with some exception for his time served in the Civil War.
He was survived by sons Charles A, Raymond of Camden NJ, and George A of Carlisle, as well as 15 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Two brothers, Frank aged 83 years who was also a war veteran, and Henry who was retired from the Cumberland Valley Railroad, also both survive, as well as his sister Mrs John Gerbig of Chambersburg.
Services were held at St Patrick's Church with burial in adjoining cemetery. His grandson, Louis J. Yeager, a seminarian at St Mary's seminary, served as sub-deacon.
