Shannon E. Ahern, 54, of Marcellus, passed away Tuesday at home. A lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, he was a 1974 graduate of West Genesee High School. Shannon was a firefighter with the Syracuse Fire Dept. for 20 years, retiring in 2005, and a member of the Firefighters Union 280. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and volunteer at Community-General Hospital. He was predeceased by his father, Kim; brother, Dirk and daughter, Amanda. Surviving are his wife of 34 years, the former Teresa LaVerne; sons, Shannon (Leslie) Jr. of Jordan, Brian of Syracuse and Brandon of Camillus; mother, Barbara Ahern of Syracuse; sisters, Katrina Ahern of Auburn and Pamela (Michael) Lavarnway of Union Springs; brother, Kim (Sharon) Ahern of Nedrow; grandchildren, Abigail and Shannon III; and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home and at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. Shannon will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners.
