While known as the "definitve" Superman artist, Swan also illustrated the adventures of The Legion of Super-Heroes, Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, Boy Commandos, Superboy and others for DC Comics since the 1940s. He was also a staff cartoonist for the armed forces newspaper, "The Stars and Stripes" during World War II. Swan was found dead of an apparent heart-attack at his home surrounded by comic books. Swan was cremated and his ashes were given to his daughter Cecilia.
