Chandler was born in slavery on a Lawrenceville,Georgia plantation. He later moved to Duluth, Ga., working as a farm hand for small wages; to support his wife and six children. In Duluth, he helped establish the town's first school for blacks, he also organized the first lodge in Duluth "The Home Protection Association" for the purpose of caring for the sick and to bury the dead. He was for 75 years a devoted Baptist and for 25 years a deacon in the Second Baptist Church of Columbus. Mr. Chandler died of cerebral thrombosis. He is buried next to his beloved son Dawson C. Chandler.
