Elden Lloyd Broadfield was born in Yates City July 2, 1920, the son of Lloyd Corey Broadfield and Florence Edna Bowman. He was married to Helen Morse in August of 1939. He entered service in July 1944. He was killed in action on February 21, 1945 on Corregidor.

(Notes for clarification: Before he joined the military, he went to get a copy of his birth certificate, and officially changed the spelling of his name to Elden. On his crypt plate, it is spelled as Eldon. Also, death date is incorrect on crypt plate, he died on the 21st, not the 12th.)

He was in the 24th Infantry Division, 34th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion, A Company.

Quoting a letter from 34th Infantry Regiment Chaplain Kingsley Hawthorne to Helen: "Your husband, with his platoon, was guarding a point on the road at the southern base of Malinta Hill at San Jose point, Corregidor Island, P.I. At this point, the main southern entrance to the tunnel in Malinta Hill opens onto the road. This entrance had been sealed by naval gun fire. Approximately at 1100 on the evening of 21 February, the enemy sealed in Malinta Hill attempted to blast their way out. The resulting explosion was directly responsible for your husband's death."

He goes on to say that he was given a Christian burial with military honors on 25 February 1945. According to the IDPF I received from the US ARMY, his remains were recovered from the hill and moved to the Manila American Cemetery for interment there. In February 1949 his remains were returned the the United States for interment in the family plot in Yates City. The Salem-Elba post of the American Legion conducted military honors at the committal in the Yates City Mausoleum.
