Canadian politician and businessman. Born in Saint-Hugues (Québec), on August 4, 1848. He studied first in Saint-Hugues then at the seminary of Saint-Hyacinthe during one year. He began as typographer in Saint-Hyacinthe, then in Joliette and went to the United States to work as typographer during two years. He returned to Montreal in 1868 employed by the papers “Montreal Witness”and “La Minerve” where he became in 1879 a foreman then subcontractor in charge of the composition and the printing as from 1879. In 1884, he founded the Gebhardt and Berthiaume Lithographing and Printing Company. He cofounded also “Le Monde Illustré” magazine. Cofounder of the magazine the World illustrated in 1883. He became an associate of the newspaper “La Presse” in 1889, then its owner from 1894 to 1904, then from 1906 to his death. He was appointed to the Legislative Council for the division of Alma on November 16, 1896, where he supported the Conservative Party. He founded also the night refuge Of Ouimet and the Lasalle Academy. He died in Office in Outremont on January 2, 1915.
