Barbara Berman, 57, passed away on April 5, 2004 after a valiant battle with cancer. She died with her loving family by her side. Barbara grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. with her parents, Morris and Jean Kozinn, and her sister, Karen Anuar. Barbara was a beautiful, sweet and shy teenager who attended the State University of New York at Buffalo. At the age of 16, she met her future husband, Jeff, in their freshman English class. She received her B.A. in psychology from SUNY-Buffalo in 1967 and her M.S. in elementary education from Hofstra University in 1968. In that year, she married Jeff and moved to Ithaca, N.Y. where she taught first grade and gave birth to her daughter, Arielle. In 1973, she and her husband moved to the Albany area, where their second daughter, Jillian, was born. In 1982, she received her M.S. in computer science at SUNY-Albany. In that year, she began working as a senior computer systems analyst for the New York State Department of Social Services and then for the New York State Department of Criminal Justice. She retired in 2003. Barbara was a special person with a unique combination of gifts. She was beautiful, graceful, elegant, gentle, caring and modest. She had many talents: she could sew, knit, quilt and make stained glass objects. She was a perfectionist at every task she undertook. She was also an avid dog-lover and during her adult life, she owned and loved five Belgian sheep dogs. In August 2001, Barbara was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. During her 20-month battle with the disease, she was able to witness two joyous family events: the wedding of her daughter, Jillian and the birth of her grandson, Nate. Barbara was a devoted mother, wife, sister, daughter, grandmother and friend and we will miss her so much. As she reminded us, life is a gift. Barbara will continue to live on through those who love her. She is survived by her husband Jeff; her daughters, Arielle and Jillian; her sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Moshe Anuar; her parents, Jean and Morris Kozinn; her sons-in-law, Dave and Alex; her grandson, Nate; and many other relatives and friends.
