Johnny Clare was a young cowboy employed by Dr. Hall of Pawhuska, Oklahoma. He was found dead on the prairie; killed in an accident witnessed only by God. He was found by Dwight Barnard. It was obvious that he had tried to crawl. His hands were bloody and torn from tearing grass up by it's roots. The horse that he was riding stood near by, teathered to a steer by a stout length of manilla rope. He was buried on the spot by friends, wrapped in a canvas tarp for his coffin. The grave is located on fourteen miles from Pawhuska on the highway that goes to Ponka City, about 50 yards South of the roadway.
