Edward C. Andrews was mustered into service on August 8th 1861 for three years service with The Twenty-Third Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry "Birney's Zouaves". He fought with Company A through all the units campaigns. He was wounded at The Battle (Skirmish) of Funkstown (MD) on July 11th 1863 during the end of the Gettysburg Campaign. In December 1863 The 23rd PA was sent to Sandusky, Ohio, to Johnson's Island to guard Rebel Prisoners. During the harsh winter, many of the soldiers got ill including Edward. He died there on February 10th 1864. His body was returned home to Philadelphia and buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery on February 25th 1864.
