Shasta was born September 15, 1936 in Roswell, New Mexico to John Francis and Vera Fry Cook.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Vera and by her in-laws Thomas and Hassie Allen, Survivors are her husband of 51 years, Joseph Weldon Allen, her daughters Terry Mead and husband Lyndel of Kerrville; Zoe (Allen) Kibbett of Kerrville; and Janet Allen-McConkey and husband David of San Antonio; grandchildren Christina and Hannah Mead; Quincy, Sean and Sierra Kibbett and Robert McConkey and two great-granddaughters Kalleigh and Makayla Mead. Also surviving are a sister, Karel (Norbert) Sternadel and a niece Deidra (John) Hall and many cousins and countless friends. Through genealogy research, it was discovered that Shasta is the 9th great-granddaughter of John and Priscilla Alden, original signers of the Mayflower Compact.
Shasta graduated from Tivy High School in 1955 where she was a member of the National Honor Society and FHA and 4-H organizations. She participated at the county and state level in 4-H and was honored as a Kerr County Gold Star girl. She graduated from LVN nursing school in San Antonio and was employed in Kerrville for the Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital, Alpine Terrace and Hilltop Village. Additionally, she served during summers as camp nurse and mom away from home for hundreds of campers at Heart O' the Hills Camp for Girls in Hunt for over thirty years. One of her greatest joys was watching her three daughters grow into loving and caring adults with beautiful families of their own. Many times in the latter years of her illness, she could always find the energy to attend just one more school or sporting event and express her pride in her very special grandchildren. An extra blessing was having two great-granddaughters, Kalleigh and Makayla who were very precious to her. Shasta was a member of the First Christian Church in Kerrville and quietly and generously gave her time and resources to help in whatever capacity was needed.
