Harold was born in Allen County, Kentucky. He graduated from what is now the University of Louisville College of Pharmacy. His first job as a pharmacist was in Harlan, Kentucky, where he married Erma Leah Chaney. He also worked as a pharmacist in Scottsville and Georgetown before taking a job at Moore Drug Company in Franklin, Kentucky, in 1940. In 1950 the family moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he worked until retirement at Pearson Drugs and the CDS stores. After retiring he did relief work, filling in at various pharmacies in South Central Kentucky when regular pharmacists took vacations, etc. He worked until he was no longer able to stand on his feet all day.
Early in his life, he played semi-pro baseball and bore for the rest of his life the scar that he received from an injury when a hard-hit baseball hit him in the lower shin. He was the most proud of his attendance record at Sunday School, having attended 41 years without missing. He was ordained as a deacon in First Baptist Church, Bowling Green, on March 18, 1945. He was well known his entire life for his sense of humor. He was always ready with a joke even though the recipient had always heard it from him before...usually many times.
