Carl's greatest achievement in life was his seventy-year marriage to Nellie (Fugate) Bruce who preceded him in death in 2008. Together they had four children, twelve grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren. They lived in Evansville since their marriage in 1937; they traveled all over the world and lived an amazing, loving, full life together.
Carl, also known as "Granddaddy," was a man of honor and respect. He took great pride in his service to the community through the Welborn Baptist Hospital Board, the Salvation Army and the Hadi Temple, where he was appointed Potentate in 1969. He was recognized for his service with multiple awards and honors; he recently said that he took the most pride in his receipt of the Salvation Army Others Award, which honors an individual who exemplifies an extraordinary spirit of service. Carl was a member of Masonic Reed #316, Scottish Rite, and York Rite. He was past recorder of Hadi Temple from 1995 to 1997. He was past president of the Great Lakes Shrine Association in 1978. He was a 67 year member of the Elks Club. He was past president of the Blind Association and past president of the East Enders which started Wesselman Park. He had a strong personal faith and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Evansville for more than sixty-five years. He has touched the lives of many and has genuinely made the world a better place.
